We don’t get much sun in the UK.  At least that’s the theory.  In practice spring and summer can be very sunny in London and the southeast.  Sure it doesn’t last all year or even that long, but when it’s there you want to take advantage of it.  For many years, driving fixed-roof cars, I always lamented the inability to open the car up to the sky on days when the sun was just glorious.  Yes, it does happen here.  And how about night-time cruises through the city?  With the top down it’s much easier to take everything in, all the great varied architecture and majesty of the Big Smoke.  Or any kind of drive really.  Sometimes you just want to let loose and enjoy the freedom and exposure to the elements (and engine sound) of open-top driving.

Targa?  No thanks.   Part of my reason for wanting to upgrade from M3 to 911 was how light the latter is in comparison.  It has slightly fewer horsepower on paper but feels quicker and sharper because it’s more compact and weighs a lot less.  Well significantly less anyway.  The Targa with its glass retractable roof is notably heavier than the convertible, so that was a definite no-no.  Not to mention the styling of the T is a bit fussy, with that chunky metal bit where the B-pillar should be.  The convertible they got just right this time, with its covered folding hard-top preserving the same sleek lines as the coupe when up, and without that unflattering hump in the rear of the previous version when down.  (The 991 convertible roof is made of three magnesium panels — four if you count the rear-window surround — enclosed by traditional soft-top fabric.)  And with the convertible I was still losing a good amount of weight from the M3, with a similar if not even better 0-60 time, even if not as much as I would have lost with the coupe.

Finding the right one

I knew I wanted a 911.  But which one?  It’d have to be second-hand — I’m not rich.  Thankfully I was buying in 2016 so the .1 had been out for a few years.  I knew I loved the 991 having hired them a few times from my local prestige rental place.  So I concluded I wouldn’t be happy with a 997.  I’d have to stretch to the current series.

Next decision: the colour.  My M3 was black which suited it well.  But a Porsche’s lines are more elegant and subtle.  Black would be too dark, those beautiful curves would be obscured and wasted.  The navy blue was interesting, but not really what I was going for.  White was a bit faddish for my liking, silver a bit plain?  Red may be great on a Ferrari but not here; I didn’t want anything too ostentatious or in-your-face.  It wouldn’t have been in keeping with the character of the car.  The metallic Agate Grey was perfect: sophisticated and serious, yet light enough to showcase the car’s refined musculature.  The navy was a close second I’d say — but not too close.

Next up: which model?



After a motoring lifetime of cycling through BMWs, largely an inherited habit, my first P-car has been a step change and an eye-opener at that.  More precise, sharper, responsive, nimble, agile and inspiring — and that includes my previous V8 M3.  It’s no wonder Porsche and the 911 in particular have the reputation they do.

This blog was born of my love for the new car and my desire to share it with others who have, or aspire to, the same pride of ownership and enjoyment of this car.  Specifically I’m referring to the 1st-generation 991, or 991.1, iteration of the iconic 911.  Forums typically group all 991 discussions together, which lumps in the new turbocharged (no comment) .2 Carreras with us natural-aspiration purists who love the linear power crescendo and glorious sonority of that legendary atmospheric flat-six.  Not to mention it’s much better-looking.

I will continue to post bits and pieces on the forums of course but this is where my deepest and most complete expositions will be.  I’ll begin with the origin story, then move on to describe and explain the few modifications I’ve chosen to make, interspersed with the odd anecdote or rumination inspired by what is without doubt the best car I’ve ever owned.  Should be fun.
